"The Imus situation was like the Arch Duke Ferdinand in a civil war between black people with common sense and black people without it." Gina McCauley host of What About our Daughters.
Hot Ghetto Mess Gets a Name changed but only after a blogger named Gina McCauley got after their hind parts. The show now titled we gotta do better was originally called Hot Ghetto Mess until Gina McCauley ramed her foot in BETs hind parts. You see recently BET tried to pass another Minstrel show off on the black population of America. The show is titled hot Ghetto Mess I actually blogged about it, in the previous post. The beautiful thing about Ginas battle is, she focused on a particularly offensive type of cooning that simply could not be explained or contextexed by BET (although they certainly did try).
Simply put calling a show about dysfunctional black behavior "Hot Ghetto Mess" is promoting self hatred and marginalization. Its a modern day minstrel title which is not acceptable to address ourselves by. IF this had been ten years ago BET may have gotten away with it because most black people were not connected to the net. If bet had pulled this 20 years ago we may not have been able to stop it because most of the outcry leading to BET changing the was published, discussed and then implemented over the net in addition to phone calls to corporations such as state farm. But it is a fact that without the internet the a whoopin that Gina put down on BET would not have been possible so quickly.
Her campaign is a perfect model of Citizenry Activism that most black americans have available to them. She has really embarassed BET and placed those cats in an intellecuatly untennable position. What it comes down to is, the sponsors did not want to be associated with and fund a program that refers to human beings as " Hot Ghetto Mess". Gina made BET go wash their hind parts. Now the next step is to watch the show find out if we can tolerated its level of cooning and then as Eddie Griffin said on the What about our Daughters black womans round table Podcast " WE ARE READY TO STRIKE"
Gina McCauley is the host of the blog what about our daughters and she is a very creative and gifted black women. She is a warrior with a clear and important message and vision. But more importantly she has some effective ideas on how we (black Americans) can combat all of the Coonish and foolish messages being shoved down the throats of black Americans. Her specific focus is combating the negative portrayal of African American women in the media and popular culture.
One of her ideas that really struck me was a boycott of all stores that sell offensive material about black people. Meaning Walmart that sells Ginuwine's Tip drill would be boycotted by the black American public. Any other company that sells material or goods that is disrespectful to the black American public would be possible targets and I think one successful boycott or the threat of boycott of a large company such as Walmart would force other smaller companies to stop selling the offensive material as well. We should focus our attention on the largest companies with the largest amount of shareholders and the companies that claim to be "Christian Oriented" who also sell or sponsor offensive material released by the music and media industries.
Three months of boycotting Walmart (or any other company) could damage them economically and make them and even companies we don't boycott change the offensive material they produce or sell. According to Gina McCauley companies such as Walmart have a right to sell anything they want including material offensive to black people. But black people also have a right to not shop at Walmart if they are gonna sell disrespectful material about black folks we have a right to let those companies know how we feel.
I think a good way to get this campaign going would be to work with the preachers to have them to tell their flock to not watch BET until they reformat their programing to be progressive, entertaining and uplifting to the black community. Their flock could go out and program their cable in their homes to block BET, advise their grown children and family about the boycott and the reasons for the boycott and to generally promote that type of spirit and progressive change amongst black people that will be needed in order to move us forward..
Once a few black churches begin with this movement they can then share the idea and reasons for the boycott with their fellow preachers. I would assume that once the boycott is started other churches will follow this campaign to make the music and media industries clean up their disrespectful images about black people they continue to put out. 50 thousand church members and community members boycotting specific companies funding material and shows that disrespect black people would have a serious economic impact on all of the offending companies. I see absolutely no reason why we cant get 50,000 church members (some of whom by the way are extremely offended by BETS cooning) to boycott BET and any other company that sells offensive material.
Along with the churches I would use the NAACP and our other social advocacy organizations to help us get the word out about our specific targets Please, Please, Please do yourself a favor and go listen to the radio show hosted at what about our daughters this young lady is remarkable, her ideas a fresh and innovative and she is ready to get after folks hind parts if they disrespect black people. Women particular. You can listen to the show here,
She is specifically talking about going after the biggest funders of companies that produce the most offensive material about black people. Some of these companies that fund Tv/raido programs about black dysfunctions referencing black people as Hot Ghetto Messes should not have even been considered for sponsorship by legitimate , responsible and large companies like State Farm. But thank god they came to their senses.
The reason why I think BET should be re-educated is because they have a long history of Cooning and in fact Bob Johnson made it clear on more than one occasion that he was in it for the money first and foremost and thus he was willing to air those booty shaking videos that degrad black women no matter what the cost to the rest ofblack America. I think this quote sums up my attitude about BET and why I think we need to keep the heat on even though BET has changed the name of the show to WE Gotta Do Better.
"Bet has been arrogant for twenty seven years and now their chickens are coming home to roost. " Gina McCauley what about our daughters
Gina then goes on to say that BET is in a weakened state and we can now go after them. I agree with her they are weakened, they have advanced with their coonish ways too far this time and we can hit them in their flanks (pockets/advertisers) and force them to change their programs into something that is progressive.
P.S Please visit her blog and listen to her podcast called the black womens round table it is excellent. Major Kudos and much love to Gina McCauley. Also much love for Eddie GRiffin for holding down the AFrosphere while he was on the Black womans Roundtable broadcast. In fact I think Eddie may have been the first person to use the term Afrosphere in the media. Thank you Eddie for showing the Afrospher loved.

I read an article about the name change and it cracks me up that BET thinks changing the name of the show and not the content would take care of the issue?
Just scrap the show. Any value it has in humor is overshadowed by the offensive manner in which it portrays a whole race of people.
Lovin' your blog. Lovin' your consciousness. Be sure to check me out at http://whyblackwomenareangry.blogspot.com. I will be happy to link you to my roll as well.
Keep up your spirit.
Peace.
Thank you for those kind words Content black women.
Bullfrog that is what you get when the people do not police their institutions efficatively.
We are going to get after their hind parts and the music industry to.
Hey Mark,
Many good points here. The most ambitious of them being the suggested boycott of outlets that pander merchandise that is disrespectful to Black Americans. Hit them in the wallet, it's the only way they will actually listen.
The things is though, it is one thing to get the message out, and another for the people who hear it, to choose of their own accord to not shop at places like Wal-Mart. I have tried for years to convince those who are near and dear to me (we're talking people who have every reason to listen to me) that shopping at corporate chains is wrong, on so many levels, for so many reasons, and the bottom line is, I've never been able to sway anyone. It's immensely frustrating.
I know this is going off on a tangent, and is not technically related to the original substance of your post, but let me ask you this. What can we do to allow people to wake up and see that there is more to life than money, and the masks they buy? How can we guide people towards an understanding that cheap, easy, and convenient is not the meaning of life?
Great Post brother Bey. The show had no substance, it was complete trash. With all the public outcry we have been giving, they should have just pulled the show. Sponsors were almost none during its time slot besides, the BET owned comapanies. There were two commericials in our areas brother Bey, here they are
